Presentation of Neum

Neum is the only municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina with access to the sea. It is located at the place where Bosnia and Herzegovina divides Croatia in two parts.

Flag of Neum

The symbols of Neum are prescribed in Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi općine Neum, published in 1996 in the Neum official gazette "Narodni list" službeno glasilo Općine Neum, No. 4.
The Decision is mentioned in the Municipal Statutes Statut Općine Neum, adopted on February 2001.

The flag, as observed in 1999 in Neum, is white with a red stripe near the one and a blue stripe near the other longer edge and with the coat of arms in the middle.

Flags horizontally divided red-white-blue with the coat of arms in the middle (photo) were used all over the town, probably on the Municipality Day 2010.

The coat of arms consists of elements symbolising the sea, a church, a sail, the sun, a dove and the Croatian checky pattern.

A table flag seen in a hotel (photo) is in proportions 3:2, with the central stripe enlarged to a double width of each of the side stripes, so that the coat of arms may fit nicely in it.

The previous coat of arms must have been adopted in the mid-1980s and was probably formally in use until the adoption of the current arms in 1996. It is a typical logo of this period, blazonable as "Or an eight-pointed segmented star gules and the base azure engrailed fimbriated argent, topped with the black inscription of the name of the municipality".
The symbolic is quite strightforward: as the only access to the sea in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Neum was being quickly developing as a summer resort, so they included in the embelm what was most important, the sun and the sea.
