Široki Brieg was called Lištica during the post-World War II Yugoslavia period, the name being actually the name of the surrounding valley.

Flag of Široki Brieg

The symbols of Široki Brieg are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Široki Brieg (text), adopted in 1998 by the Municipal Council and published in the Municipal official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Široki Brieg, No. 1.

The flag is described in the municipal "Strategy of Communication with the Public for years 2009-2012" (Strategija komuniciranja s javnošću Općine Široki Brijeg 2009-2012. godine), published on 24 September 2009 in Službeni glasnik Općine Široki Brieg, No. 10 (text), as follows:

The Community of Široki Brijeg is the administrative, economic, cultural, educational and religious centre of the Western Herzegovina Canton. Široki Brijeg was named after the mount dominating the region. River Lištica flows through the very centre of the town. The most impressive and visually recognizable symbol of Široki Brijeg is the basilica attributed to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This recognizable visual and spiritual symbol of Široki Brijeg was indeed, after the public competitions and discussions were held, respecting the heraldic laws, included in the coat of arms and the flag of the Community of Široki Brijeg.[...]
The flag of the municipality of Široki Brijeg if of two colours: blue and white, in proportions 2:1. The flag is made of three fields, two blue and one white. In the white field, covering the central part, there is the coat of arms. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag by its height and width. The proportions of the flag are 1:2 (height:width). The blue colour of the flag matches the colour of the coat of arms.

The coat of arms is "Azure a two-towered church argent and the chief gules fimbriated also argent". The top of the shield has two rectangular indentations.
The color coding is given on the Chromoton scale, proprietary to the Zagreb dye company Chromos as:
- cinnabar red: 200;
- cobalt blue: 400;
- silver;
- black.
The church is the Franciscan church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

The coat of arms is described in the aforementioned municipal "Strategy of Communication with the Public for years 2009-2012" as follows:

The coat of arms is made in a shield shape. The size of the coat of arms is width x 1.35 = height, and it is divided into two parts. The top part is made in the red colour and together with the white fimbriation it occupies 25%% of the coat of arms' height. It is divided into five equal rectangular fields (three red and two white) covering 2/3 of the red area. The lower part covers 75%% of the coat of arms' height. On the blue background is a drawing of the church in silver. The blue area is made of a rectangle ending with a semi-circle.
