The municipality of Rio Piracicaba (14,319 inhabitants in 2007; 371.4 sq. km) is located 130 km of Belo Horizonte. The first settlement, known as São Miguel de Rio Piracicaba, was founded on 29 September 1713 by the gold miner João dos Reis Cabral. The municipality of Rio Piracicaba was erected on 30 August 1911 by State Law No. 556.

The flag is vertically divided into two equal fields, at hoist, horizontally divided red-white-green, at fly, white with a mining shovel laden with ore, surmounted by three red stars, 1 and 2, and surmounting ten small green discs; the whole emblem is surmounted by a red scroll charged with the name of the municipality in black letters. Red and green represents Minas Gerais and Brazil, respectively. The shovel represents the mining resources. The upper red star represents the municipality while the two lower red stars represent the two districts of Conceição de Piracicaba and Padre Pinto. The disks represent the settlements of Bairro de Fátima, Bicas, Luiz Ensch, Córrego São Miguel, Tomé, Ponte Nova, Estiva, Sete Moinhos, Gomes de Melo, Mutuca and Brandão. Eleven settlements are listed but only ten disks are shown.

The municipal symbols are prescribed in the municipal Organic Law (Statutes), adopted on 10 May 1990.
