The municipality of Sonora (12,251 inhabitants in 2006; 4,075 sq. km) is located in the north of Mato Grosso do Sul, 360 km of Campo Grande.
The
municipality of Sonora was created by State Decree No. 828 on 3 June 1988, which
separated it from the municipality of Pedro Gomes. Commandant Maurício Coutinho
Dutra was appointed by President of the Republic Getúlio Vargas
director of Paner, the airline in charge of night flights between Rio de
Janeiro, São Paulo, Cuiabá and Manaus. After the military coup of 1964,
Coutinho retired in a ranch located near river Corrientes, in the
municipality of Pedro Gomes. In 1975, he offered to his nephew, Colonel Raul
Kelvin Thuin, 10,000 ha of land, asking him to manage them in a way "useful
to Brazil". With the help of the consulting company Planec, led by the
Swiss-born Beat Rolf Stucki, and of Fernando Correia da Costa, Governor of
Mato Grosso, Kelvin set up a development plan for the area, based on the
building of a factory producing sugarcane alcohol. Lamartino Navarro, the
precursor of plant alcohol production in Brazil, joined the project, and the
Aquarius plant started production in 1979. Commandant Maurício Coutinho
Dutra was fond of western films; during his retirement, he often went to
Rondonópolis to watch such films. As a reference to his own situation, he
called his retirement place Sonora, for the Mexican border town where the
black hat guys hid from the Texan marshals in western films.

Municipal website
The municipal symbols (flag, coat of arms and
anthem) of Sonora are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 24 of 22 December 1989.
"Article 6.
The municipal flag of Sonora - MS [Mato Grosso do Sul],
designed by the heraldist and vexillologist Pr. Acioné Antonio Peixoto de
Faria, shall be tierced per fess. The outer fess shall be green, forming a
right angle, with a vertical part of 4 modules and a horizontal part of 3
modules. The central and inner fesses shall be yellow and blue, respectively,
with the same dimensions. A white rectangle of 8 x 5 modules shall be charged
in the middle with a six-pointed star.
The municipal flag of Sonora
follows the "tierced per fess" rules. The angles are the heraldic symbols of
liberty, equality and fraternity, following the motto of the French
Revolution.
- Green represents the municipal government and the municipal
seat, and is also a symbol of tranquility, dedication, self confidence,
courage, intrepidity and valiance;
- Yellow represents the rural estates
located on the municipal territory;
- Blue is the symbol of justice,
nobleness, perseverance, zeal, loyalty, recreation and beauty.
Article
7.
As prescribed by the heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall be a
rectangle of 14 x 20 modules."
