Municipality

The municipal of Candelária (31,541 inhabitants in 2016; 93,493 ha) is located 180 km north of Porto Alegre.

Candelária was established in 1862 by Joăo Kochenborger and Jacob Welsh, the sons of German immigrants established in Rio Pardo. They built an aqueduct to supply water from stream Grande, used to power a sawmill and a maize and wheat mill.
The parish of Nossa Senhora de Candelária was established on 9 May 1876; in the beginning of the 20th century, the town counted c. 150 inhabitants. The municipality of Candelária was established on 7 July 1925.

Candelária is the namesake of the saurischian dinosaur Guaibasaurus candelariensis, identified in 1999.
