The municipality of Fazenda Vilanova (3,697 inhabitants in 2010; 85 sq. km) is located in eastern central Rio Grande do Sul, 100 km of Porto Alegre. Fazenda Vilanova might have been named for an old estate ("fazenda") owned by the Vilanova family. The town developed along the Federal Road BR-386 (445 km), which links Iraí, on the border with Santa Catarina, to Canoas, joining there BR-116; Federal Law No. 11,620 of 19 December 2007 named the road "Governador Leonel de Moura Brizola". In 1972, the "águia Azul" gas station, the "Figueira" restaurant and the "Cardoso" general stores were built near the "Mallmann" shop, itself there since the 1950s. The district of Fazenda Vilanova was established within the municipality of Bom Retiro do Sul by Municipal Law No. 708 of 16 May 1983 and inaugurated on 29 January 1984. The municipality of Fazenda Vilanova was established by a State Law No. 10,642 of 28 December 1995, following a plebiscite organized on 22 October 1995.

The flag of Fazenda Vilanova has for official colors green, representing the agricultural resources of the region, golden yellow, representing economic progress and confidence in a prosperous future, and red, representing tenacity and commitment to work of the inhabitants of the municipality.

The coat of arms of Fazenda Vilanova is "a Portuguese shield, the chief tierced per pale, 1. Gules (red) a handshake or (gold) and argent, symbolizing the unity of the peoples who colonized the area, 2. Azure (blue) a Latin cross argent, representing the religious faith of the inhabitants of the municipality, 3. Gules an open book argent a flame or and gules, symbolizing the permanent struggle for education, culture and knowledge, boosting the development and a priority for the municipality. In the middle of the shield a flattened-cone shaped fess argent segmented or, depicting the Federal road that crosses the municipality, surrounded sinister by a tree or and vert near a house or and argent, a fess wavy or joining the central fess, representing the settlement and its way of access, all on a background vert, dexter by three trees or and vert on a background vert, representing the primary forests of the region, which boosted the regional economy, together with erva mate and fruit, in base sinister a bovine's head argent, a pig's head or and a poultry argent, representing animal productions, one of the pillars of the municipal economy. Below the shield a scroll gules inscribed in letters sable (black) '28/12 FAZENDA VILANOVA 1995', the name of the municipality and the date of its political emancipation. The scroll ends dexter with a maize plant vert fructed or and sinister with a wheat plant of the same. The shield surmounted by a five-towered mural crown argent."
