Municipality

The municipality of Mormaço 2(,968 inhabitants in 2016; 14,611 ha) is located 250 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Mormaço was established around 1900, mostly by Italian and German colonists. Originally known as Mundo Novo do Jacuí (Jacuí's New World), the place was renamed to Mormaço ("Sultry Weather"), after the local atmospheric features.
The municipality of Mormaço was established by State Law No. 9,616 promulgated on 20 March 1992.

The coat of arms of Mormaço is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 33 promulgated on 1 June 1993.

The coat of arms of Mormaço is composed of a shield in Portuguese style, origin of the Brazilian heraldry. It features two lions rampant or surrounding the symbol of Industry and Commerce of the same, placed on a sky azure. In center a river azure. Sinister a man sowing in fields vert placed on the regional topography vert with a Brazilian pine sable surmounted by a sun or on a sky azure. The shield supported by the basic products of the municipality's workers tied by a scroll gules inscribed with the toponym "20-03. MORMAÇO. 1992". The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent.

Detailed description
The shape of the coat of arms of the municipality of Mormaço is based on Portuguese heraldry, the origin of Brazilian heraldry, with a symbolism artistically elaborated with a mystic and allegoric rigor in shapes and dimensions prescribed by usual heraldry. The colors obey the following technical and codification: Or (gold) is a symbol of force and wealth; argent (silver), of history and nobleness; gules (red), of justice and honor; vert, of natural environment.
The coat of arms features dexter two lions rampant or holding Mercury's helmet and a cogwheel of the same, which are Industry and Commerce's universal symbol. The wavy lines in the center represents the river whose water produce the fog at the origin of the place's name, and a man sowing in fields vert, representing the farmers who cleared the forest and carried on sowing seed that formed millions grains, the hills represent the region's topography vert, reflecting the forest's greenness, the Brazilian pine sable symbolizes the forests as a representative tree; the furrows vert represent the origin of the municipality's productions. The raising sun or irradiates light in all directions, supplying life and warmth to the land that abundantly produces grains, represented by the supporters; the scroll gules represents protection. The mural crown argent represents the three powers, Executive, Legislative and Judiciary and a town of third rank, seat of a municipality.
