Municipality

The municipality of Maravilha (24,345 inhabitants in 2015; 16,944 ha) is located 620 km west of Florianópolis.

Maravilha wes established in 1951 by the Companhia Territorial Sul Brasil, established in 1925. Originally known as Mancha da Pinhais (Pinewood), the place was renamed to Maravilha (Wonderful) to attract more colonists. The local tradition says that the new name was coined by a group of hunters viewing the then wild landscape from the top of the hill that overlooks the town.
The establishment of Maravilha is credited to José Leal Filho (1902-1972), also a noted poet under the name of Juca Ruivo. Appointed administrator by the colonizing company, he promoted a harmonious development of the town, pushing the erection of churches, schools and a hospital.
The municipality of Maravilha was established by State Law No. 348 promulgated on 21 June 1958, and inaugurated on 27 July 1958.

Maravilha was proclaimed Children's Town by Federal Law No. 12,596 promulgated in 2012. The town has been informally known as Children's Capital since 1970, when a population census confirmed the high rate of birth and education in the town. Visitors were already amazed by the first civic parade organized on 7 September 1954, which involved the municipality's numerous schools and children. Officials invited in subsequent parades described the town's streets as "adorned with children".

The flag of Maravilha is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 959 promulgated on 30 October 1984.

Article 1.
The flag prescribed by Law No. 344 promulgated on 15 May 1970, adopted in a public contest won by Pr. Francisco Gialdi, shall have the following design and colors.

1. Design. On a white background - symbolizing peace and order - a red airplane flying. This is the municipality of Maravilha prepared to rise. To rise always. To rise higher. The plane's body - a yellow circle over a blue one, their combination resulting in green, in the center (complementation theory) - symbolizing diversity and unity: diverse races - diverse beliefs - diverse colors - diverse ideas - diverse cultures - diverse origins - diverse ideologies - diverse social positions - diverse feelings - diverse political conceptions - diverse resources. But a sole ideal, a sole goal: growth, unity and development of Maravilha.
Everyone to reach this goal:
The flying plane:: the infinite for goal.
Elevated ideas cultivated by Maravilha's people.

2. Colors
The green-yellow stripe - the national colors - symbolizes national incorporation. Red is the main coloir of the flag of Santa Catarina.
Maravilha is not an isolated municipality. It belongs to a state (Santa Catarina), symbolized by the plane's color, red, and is a living cell pf Brazil, symbolized by the green-yellow stripe.
