Municipality

The municipality of Porto União (35,543 inhabitants in 2020; 85,124 ha) is located on the border with Paraná, 460 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Porto União forms a single conurbation with União da Vitória (Paraná), the "Iguaçu Twins" being separated from each other only by the railway and river Iguaçu.

Porto União was settled in 1842 after the discovery of Vau, a section of river Iguaçu with shallow water, suitable for crossing by cattle, and also to embark and disembark when navigating the river. Renamed to Porto União da Vitória in 1855, the town was boosted after the establishment in 1880 of Colonel Amazonas Marcondes, a salt trader from Palmas. The colonel initiated the next year steam navigation on river Iguaçu, transporting cargoes and passengers.
The municipality of Porto União was established on 5 September 1917 in the aftermath of the Contestado War.
