The municipality of São João do Sul (7,012 inhabitants in 2010; 18,270 ha) is located on the border with Rio Grande do Sul, 250 km south-west of Florianópolis.

The flag of São João do Sul is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 401 
promulgated on 5 October 1980.
Article 1.
The flag of the municipality 
of São João do Sul shall be rectangular, charged in the center with the coat of 
arms of the municipality, and with the following colors. Yellow, in the inner 
lozenge, representing the resources of our lands, blue, in the upper right and 
lower left triangles, representing the ocean bathing the municipality's shores, 
and red. The red triangles and the lozenge represent integration of São João do 
Sul to the process and development of Santa Catarina.

The flag of São João do Sul is prescribed by 
Municipal Law No. 400 promulgated on 5 October 1980.
Article 1.
The 
official symbol of the municipality, or coat of arms, shall have the following 
characteristics.
A - A shield-shaped design.
B - A three-towered mural 
crown representing the municipality's administrative autonomy.
C - A scroll 
beneath the shield inscribed "São João do Sul, 20/12/1964", the date of 
foundation of the municipality.
D - The shield's upper and lower right 
quarters representing commerce and industry.
E - The upper right shield with 
products of the soil, seagulls and the sea, representing tourism.
F - The 
lower left field with crops: rice, maize, cassava and a bovine, representing the 
basic products of agriculture in the municipality.
