About the club

Club Universidad de Chile is a professional football (soccer) team that is owned and operated by the eponymous university. In several Latin American countries, there are professional football clubs that are owned by and affiliated with a university and that compete in the professional league system. These clubs are not the universities' collegiate football teams, like those competing in, for instance, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that governs sporting events between colleges and universities in the United States. In the Chilean Campeonato Nacional (National Championship) there are three such clubs: the Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, the Club Universidad de Chile, and U.Concepción.

One flag is an unequal, symmetrical horizontal triband of red and blue (stripes widths approx. 1+3+1) with the club's emblem on the middle stripe and the name on the other two: The emblem, in the same medium color shades as the flag, shows a blue shield with a white letter "U" and a red owl as crest, the whole edged in white a surrounded by 9 small white stars in arch under and flanking it, with the lowest star on the lower stripe boundary; on the upper stripe the word "Universidad" and on the lower "de Chile," all in thin white serifless capitals.

Another (a supporters' unofficial flag?) is plain blue with a red "U" in the block-serif, jagged style usually associated with universities initials.
