In 1820, San Martin led his Ejercito Libertador (Liberating Army) on an expedition to liberate Peru, known as the Expedición Libertadora al Peru. The army was comprised of personnel from Chile, Las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata and Peru, and each nation was represented by a star on this flag. Francisco Gregoric, 24 December 2002

The exact layout of the Chilean national flag was fixed on 4 July 1854; before that, the blue canton was sometimes rectangular but usually square.
