According to the latest population counting there are about 5 100 inhabitants in Zruč nad Sázavou, including the villages Želivec, Dubina, Nesměřice and Domahoř. Sázavský monastery was founded in 1032. This was the beginning of settlement of Posázaví. The record of the year MCL (1150) was found in the church of Povýšení sv. Kříže in Zruč nad Sázavou. That means that Zruč was founded between these two years. The first preserved written record about Zruč is from 1334. Heřman was the first owner of Zruč. Then Zruč belonged to Lords of Kolovraty. This family also owned several manors in Posázaví, e.g. Chřenovice. At one time they used to call themselves Zručští from Chřenovice. Jiří Kalenic from Kalenice bought Zruč from the Kolovrat's in 1553. Under the rule of this family Zruč had been developing so much that in 1561 when Ferdinand Habsburský was the emperor, Zruč was promoted to become a town having all privileges of towns. Kalenic family heraldry (silver bull horns on the red shield) became the basis for town emblem establishment. Town privileges, including markets were confirmed and updated by Leopold I in 1662.
