Adopted 28.12.1987, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted on November 5, 1975. The right half of the arms show a wavy bar symbolising the Rhine and Neckar rivers. The lion is the lion of the Palatinate and symbolises the fact that the area belonged to the Principality of the Palatinate for many centuries.Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
