Adopted 27.10.1988, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted on August 26, 1980. The largest part of the county was ruled in the early Middle Ages by the Counts of Achalm. The counts did not use arms, but in the 12th century the Zwiefalten Abbey appointed arms to the counts (who had founded the monastery). These arms were adopted by the county in 1980 as county arms.Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
