Description

A black-yellow banner [hanging flag] with the arms. Sources: personal observation when I visited the city some time ago, arms from Stadler 1964-1971.

Stefan Schwoon, 6 March 2001

From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms show the head of St. Mauritius, the patron saint of the city. The arms first appear in the early 16th century, but it was already used as a symbol for the city on coins from the early 14th century. (...) The present image is practically unchanged since the 16th century. From 1934-1945 the head was not used, instead arms divided gold and black were used, with over the partition line a sword and a swastika.

Literature: Stadler 1964-1971.
