Neustadt Coat of Arms

Shield Or, a lion rampant double queued Sable, armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Neustadt, a possession of the County of Henneberg, was first mentioned in 1248. It was acquired by the Wettin kin in 1353. The oldest seal displays the lion of the Margraves of Meißen and the old name of the city: Haid. City seals from the 17th century displayed a demi-lion issuant and two roses as distinguishing mark in a shield parted per fess. Since then the doubled tail appeared first. The lion was mismatched as that one of Thüringen, being barry of Argent and Gules. The arms were amended in 1962, displaying now the tinctures of the Margraves of Meißen. The emendation was caused due to an order of the Coburgian government from 1890.
