Grainau Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale, at dexter Vert a bear head Argent armed Gules, at sinister Argent a fleur-de-lis Vert.
Meaning:
Grainau was established on 1 January 1935 by a merger of Obergrainau and Untergrainau, the upper and the lower village. The head of the bear is alluding to the fact that around 1805 the last bear was killed in the forest beneath the Riffelwände. The area was before called "home of the bears". The fleur-de-lis is taken from the family arms of the Lords of Hammersbach. In 1419 a member of the family built a mill for the local inhabitants with permission of his sourereign, the Bishop of Freising.
