Ballenstedt is a small town just north of the Harz mountains. The coat of arms is derived from the arms of the Askanian kin, who came from the area of Ballenstedt. The helmet, mantling and crest ought to be black and yellow, but for better visual distinction dark red is used instead of black in the flag.

The colours were black and yellow, granted in 1896 by Duke Friedrich I of Anhalt.
