Rieneck Coat of Arms

Shield quartered, 1st and 4th quarter Or three chevrons Gules, 2nd and 4th quarter barry of ten of Or and Gules, in centre over all a 6-spokes wheel Argent.
Meaning:
The barry shield displays the arms of the Counts of Rieneck, whose ancestral seat had been the local castle since 1179. The counts granted city rights around 1250. The chevrons are displaying the arms of the Counts of Hanau, successors of the Rieneck kin. The wheel is representing the Archbishopric of Mainz, to which the city belonged between 1366 and 1803. The shield was decorated by a comital coronet for a long time. In literature the arms in historical tinctures are displayed since 1898.
