Gefell Coat of Arms

Shield Argent a tower Gules masoned Sable with port and windows of the same and topped by a bulbous spire Azure.
Gefell was first mentioned as a village in 1201 and on a charter of the Reeves of Plauen as their posession. It was called a city since 9 June 1395. It had been part of a exclave of the Electorate of Sachsen in 1460, was regained by the reeves in 1547 and finally acquired by the electors in 1569. It was ceded to Preußen (Prussia) in 1815. The tower was also displayed on a city seals from around 1500, standing on a damascene background, also on a painting by Otto Hupp. The dark red framework was introduced in 1993.The tower probably is a representation of the defence tower of the city church from the 12th century (see : this photo.
