Döbeln Coat of Arms

Shield Or a castle Sable masoned Or with embattled wall, three towers with roofs Gules and three closed gates Or, between the towers two flags Gules flagging to dexter.
Meaning:
On an island in the Mulde River there had been a German castle, which was donated in 981 by Emperor Otto II to the Benedictine Memleben Abbey. In 1015 it was acquired by the Benedictine Imperial Abbey of Hersfeld. Besides the castle a settlement developed, which was mentioned as a city in 1350. The area was ruled by a reeve of the Margraviate of Meißen at least since 1221. The main business lines had been textiles industries and the production of cigars. A similar pattern already appeared on a local seal on a charter from 1325. The building is stressing the character of a city. The seal displayed halberds with pennnants charged with saltires, which had been replaced by the red flags later.
