Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a griffin rampant Argent tongued Gules, upon his breast an inescutcheon parted pe fess of Argent and Azure.
Meaning:
The Stein-Hilpoltstein family, imperial commissionaires, founded the city before 1300. The shield displays their family arms and was depicted already on the oldest city seal with prints since 1332, probably being older. The griffin is supposed to belong to the Counts of Peilstein, ancestors of the Stein family. The inescutcheon in the 15th century was displayed without griffin upon the breast of an eagle issuant. The current pattern was fixed in 1965 but was according to Ralf Hartemink in use since the late 19th century.
