Obernzell Coat of Arms

Shield Argent a wolf rampant Gules.
Meaning:
Former names had been "Griesbach in der Zell" or "Hafnerzell". The town belonged to the Bishopric of Passau until 1803. A seal was first mentioned in 1812, displaying the lion without shield and with a garland of laurel instead. The medal of the mayor (1820) first displayed the lion in a shield. The local authorities claimed in 1835, the arms had been granted by Bishop Albrecht of Passau (1362 - 1380). The courtyard in Wegscheid revealed however the claim as a fairy tale. The submitted image from 1835 dispalyed a sinister facing wolf. It is unknown, when his direction was changed.
