Greding Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a crowned prince Or holding a sceptre by his left hand and sitting on a chair Or.
Greding was mentioned as a city since 1375. The first seal was mentioned in 1334 and prints are known since 1341. It probably displayed the German king, as Greding had been a royal estate until 1311, when it was acquired by the Bishopric of Eichstätt. The secret seal from around 1430 displayed a woman instead, in order to create a canting element, as the name was considered to be derived from Gretel (=Maggy). During the centuries the woman was considered to be St. Margaret (with a palm frond 1490) or the consort of Emperor Heinrich VII or the consort of Mayor Bscheidle (1720). When the woman turned to become a prince is not mentioned in source.
