Wendelstein Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, on base Argent an engraver of the same with beard and apron Or, holding a stone Argent with its top pointing to the ground.
Meaning:
In 1529 there had been an agreement about the seal of Wendelstein between the Margraves of Ansbach and the Free Imperial City of Nürnberg. The seal displayed a dwarfish man turning (German: wenden) a big stone upside down. The arms were thus punning. The seal of 1638 reveals the man as an engraver. The tinctures were first mentioned in 1718. The current arms are based on that version and a sculpture on a local well from 1878 and were redesigned in 1965.

The arms were granted on 20 March 1529 and confirmed on 31 July 1979 by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Mittelfranken. The banner was probably approved together with the arms.
