Coat of Arms

Shield Or, a rooster statant Gules on a thorn branch Sable.
Meaning:
Duke Ludwig of Teck granted city rights to Dornhan in 1256. Due to competing rights of Alpirsbach Abbey the city rights were deployed, even after the city had been acquired by Württemberg in 1380. Those split rights were displayed in the oldest arms on a seal from the 15th century. The shield was parted (per pale) of Argent and Or, at dexter showing a black crozier on a green triplemount, and at sinister showing a black attire. From 1534 until 1638 and again until 1930 local seals displayed at dexter attires and at sinister the canting rooster (German: Hahn) upon a thorn (German: Dorn). In the 18th century both quarters were changed. The current arms are based on a coloured painting from 1535, also displayed by Siebmacher (1605), omitting the attires. Since 1958 this pattern was also used on local seals.
