I would call the charge surrounding the leaf ('cartouch' perhaps) as
an "embattled lozenge" - is this heraldically correct or is there an alternative?

The term "embattled lozenge" is correct - it stands for an old castle
to control the roads in the 13th century. The leaf symbolizes a "thing"-place,
surrounded by linden trees.
