Description

White-red with the arms. Sources: flag from Ulle 2000, arms from the Thuringia official website.

Stefan Schwoon, 16 March 2001

Flag adopted ca. 1990, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on October 3, 1990. The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged: the lion of the County of Meissen, the arms of the Lords of Sonneberg in the second quarter, in the third quarter the arms of the Counts of Schaumberg-Rauenstein and in the fourth quarter the arms of Saxony.

Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
