Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided by a black centred cross. The first field shows two upright blue keys in a silver (= white) field. The secand field shows a golden waning moon crescent a 6-point star of the same colour. The other fields are plain red respectively silver (= white).
According to source the cross is symbolizing the archbishopric and electorate of Köln. So do the keys, the symbol of St.Peter, who is the patron saint of the archbishopric. Crescent and star are attributes of St.Mary, the patron saint of the local parish church. Köln gained sovereignty over Kempen in 1294. Since then the pattern with keys, sun and moon is known from seals. Later the sun was replaced by a star. The current pattern is based upon a description of the archbishopric of Köln from 1659, made by Strevesdorff.
