German Canoeing: Introduction

DKV has the legal form of a registered association (eingetragener Verein/ e.V.). The association has 19 subdivisions with about 1300 clubs and 116,000 members in 2009. So she is the world greatest canoeing association.
The foundation of DKV was iniated by Canoe-Club Alsterbrüder (today: Alster Canoe Club, Germany's oldest club established in 1905) on 15 March 1914 in Hamburg. The association was dissolved under NS-rule in 1934 and reestablished in 1949 in the British and American Occupation Zones. In 1938 there had been more than 110 clubs with more than 44,000 members. In spring 1991 the Deutscher Kanu-Sport-Verband (DKSV), the parallel organization in former DDR merged with DKV. For further information click: DKV homepage
Editorial notes:
1) Flags are used very seldom. The association and the clubs prefer pennants (Wimpel). Some clubs have only vertical versions.
2) Vertcal pennants are often used as boat pennants. The are fixed behind the seat of the last crewman. In this function the German term is Bootswimpel or Wanderwimpel. This kind of pennants is also fixed at the carrier of bicycles as a Fahrradwimpal on bicycle tours. Vertical pennants are fairly small, ahving size about a bit more than 10cm width and 30cm height.
