Robert Bornhofen

Robert Bornhofen Reederei - The company is located in Hamburg  and was established by Robert Leopold Bornhofen, born on 15 October 1880 in Koblenz (former Rhine Province of Prussia), after his partner had left the predessor “Unterelbische Reederei Bornhofen & Treess”, established on 1 May 1911, which ran a tugboat and lighter service up to Finland and Lithuania. First dealing again with lighters Bornhofen bought his first freighter in 1923. At the end of WW II nearly all his ships got lost in order to pay reparations. His crewmen then had been employed in his harbour service branch. In 1948 Bornhofen began to rebuilt his fleet alone and together with Heinrich Bischoff as “Bornhofen & Bischoff”. He began with wrecks and old ships due to allied restrictions. After those restrictions had been abolished he also began to buy new built ships.
In 1957 the harbour service branch was outsourced, the fleet of Bornhofen too, which was renamed as “Bischoff  & Popp”.
Due to economic difficulties, which infected the whole shipping business, Bornhofen began to re-flag ships to cheap countries since 1973. Bornhofen died on 4 August 1973. The company was lead by its employees Wittleder, Hein, Koch and Sürie and the company was changed into an oHG. The troubles increased and since 1982 the business was maintained by ship broker company “W.von Essen & W.Jacoby”. In 1985 the end was reached and the last two ships had to go by forced sale.
