The canton had nearly 32,000 inhabitants in 2010, around 10% of them living in the capital. The canton consists of the rural parishes Chontaduro, Chumundé, Lagarto, Montalvo (seat: Horqueta), Rocafuerte and capital city of Río Verde. The name giving Río Verde (= green river) has a total length of 110 km and is flowing into the Pacific ocean. Capital and canton share the same flag.

Flag
The flag is a white-green horizontal bicolour with a red triangle at hoist charged with the torch light of progress and abundance held by a naked arm
Meaning:
The white colour is representing the purity of the souls of the inhabitants, the mists of the sea and the rivers, the pulp of the coconut, the fruit of palm trees and seeds of fig trees. The green colour incontrovertibly is that one of the woods, fields and mountains, the fresh herbal breezes from the pastures in our fertile groves and the exuberant carrier of a promising future. The blood red colour was shed by our heroes with valour and courage in order to free us from Spanish subjugation. The torch is also the crest of the coat of arms of the canton ((I don't describe the complete pattern of the Coa, as it is not part of the flag))
The flag and coat of arms were approved by the council of the canton on 20 July 1999.
