The parish of Mangahurco (16,862 ha), part of Zapotillo canton (Loja province),
is located 280 km from Loja and 60 km from Zapotillo. The parish is made of the
boroughs of Sauco, Leonera, La Rusia, Cañaveral, Ojos de Agua, Saucecitos and
Mangahurco (capital, 340 inhabitants).
The parish of Cazaderos was established on 12 October 1910, with Mangahurco as its capital. Originally part of the canton of Célica, the parish was transferred in 1947 to Puyango canton, and, eventually, ion 17 August 1980, to the newly established Zapotillo canton. The parish was renamed Mangahurco on 11 November 2010, upon request of the inhabitants.
The unprecedented drought experienced in 1968, the 1970 earthquake, and the armed conflict that broke out with Peru in 1981 have caused a dramatic population loss to other places in Ecuador and worldwide, without any hope of return.

The three parishes of Mangahurco, Bolaspamba and Cazaderos manage a big forest (40,000 ha) planted with guayacán. The guayacán ("Handroanthus chrysanthus subsp. pluvicola" (A.H. Gentry) S.O. Grose), known as "tajibo" in Bolivia and "ipê-amarelo" in Brazil, is Venezuela's National Tree. In January, the first rain events after the dry season trigger the flowering of the trees, which are covered with golden yellow flowers. Promotion of the guayacán flowering in Mangahurco was initiated in 2012 by the Ministry of Tourism, attracting more than 2,000 visitors, and up to 4,000 in the next years. The local authorities have protected the forest, endangered by timber exploitation, since 1978; accordingly, they seek international recognition of this policy as sustainable management of forest resources.

The symbols of Mangahurco, designed by Rodrigo Villamagua*, were inaugurated
on 1 October 2014. The flag is horizontally divided yellow-green-white with the
parish coat of arms in the middle.
Yellow is a symbol of resources, development, nobleness, temperance. This is also the colour of the flowering guayacán, a symbol of constant progress. Green is a symbol of fields, hills and mountains, which are the heritage of a millenary past. White is a symbol of purity, kindness and transparency of people committed to prestige and progress.
