The municipality of Padilla de Abajo (93 inhabitants in 2010; 2,776 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km of Burgos.

Padilla is mentioned in the Becerro de las Behetrías (14th century) as belonging to the famous Padilla lineage, that gave four Masters and two Commanders of the Order of Calatrava, a Master of the Order of Saint James, a Marshal of Castile and several other nobles involved in the service of the kings. Queen María de Padilla, Peter I's wife, also belonged to this lineage. The Padilla were succeeded as the village's lords by their descendants, the Dukes of Infantado.
