The municipality of Vega de Espinareda (2,494 inhabitants in 2010; 13,201 ha; municipal website) is located in the northwest of León Province, 115 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Vega de Espinareda (1,577 inh.; capital), Sésamo (328 inh.), Valle de Finoledo (217 inh.), San Pedro de Olleros (128 inh.), El Espino (89 inh.), Burbia (68 inh.), San Martín de Moreda (53 inh.), Moreda (43 inh.), Espinareda de Vega (19 inh.), Villar de Otero (7 inh.), Penoselo (5 inh.) and Bustarga (4 inh.).

Vega de Espinareda developed around the San Andrés de Espinareda monastery, mentioned for the first time in 923. In 1128, Jimena Muñíz , mistress of King Alfonso VI, was buried in the monastery; her tombstone is shown today in the León Archeological Museum. Increased by noble and royal donations, the monastery peaked in 1317 when the Abbot of San Andrés was granted the rule over the village of Vega by King Alfonso XI. From the 16th century onwards, the monastery was a main center of culture and education; its Faculty of Philosophy and its College of Arts and Literature were famous for its professors and alumni, including the historian Prudencio de Sandoval (1553-1620; the author of a biography of Charles V, appointed Bishop of Pamplona in 1612), Cardinal Francisco de Lorenzana (1722-1804; appointed Archbishop of Mexico in 1766) and the Romantic writer Enrique Gil y Carrasco (1816-1845; author of El Señor de Bembibre, 1844, considered as the most relevant Spanish historical novel). San Andrés was then known as Monasterio Sabio, the Wise Monastery.
