Presentation of Becerril de Campos

The municipality of Becerril de Campos (959 inhabitants in 2010; 7,896 ha) is located 15 km from Palencia.

Becerril, resettled in the the second half of the 9th century by King Alfonso III, was in the 13th-14th centuries a main political, cultural and artistic center. The village, once ruled by the Counts of Lara, was for long a behetría, therefore the villagers selected themselves their lord.
Becerril is the birth place of the athlete Mariano Haro (b. 1940), specialized in long distance running (5,000 m and 10,000 m - 4th in the Munich Olympic Games, 1972) and cross-country (2nd in the Word Championship in 1973, 1974 and 1975). Mariano Haro was the main character of the first issue of the popular TV program Informe Semanal, shot on 31 March 1973 in the streets of Becerril.

Symbols of Becerril de Campos

The flag and arms of Becerril de Campos are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 26 May 1997 by the Palencia Provincial Government, signed on 6 June 1997 by the President of the Government and published on 16 June 1997 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 113 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag with proportions 1:1, red with a yellow bend. In the middle is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Per pale Castilla y León, 1b. Gules a roofed shrine or, 2. Or a calf [becerro] sable terraced vert. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.
The flag hoisted on the Town Hall (photo) seems to be rectangular, most probably to match the companion flags of Spain and of the Palencia Province.

The monument showed on the municipal arms is the local humilladero (photo), a single-crossed calvary built in the 18th century. The shrine is built over a water tank; the cross is protected by a tiled roof supported by seven stone columns.
