Symbols of Villaverde del Río
Municipality of Villaverde del Río in the Province of Sevilla, Andalucia, has its own symbols aprroved by the General Secretariat of Local Administration on 08.08.2025.
Coat of arms: Description: Vert , an open silver castle on three tiers of the same, guarded by two rampant gold lions and supported by four waves of vert and argent. A red field charged with a bishop's crosier or, bent, surmounted by an open silver book with the inscription ETYMOLOGIARUM in sable letters. The crest is a mural crown of a town.
Meaning: The castle and lions are the most recognized arms of the Vicentelo de Leca family, lords of Villaverde del Río, Brenes, and Cantíllana from 1577 until the abolition of feudal estates. Their imprint remains in the earliest sigillographic seals of the Villaverde town hall, which have been repeated to this day, in one form or another, as a symbol of the municipality's identity. In honor of this original seal, the Vicentelo arms are adorned with three tiers of silver and green waves, clearly referencing the town's name, the Guadalquivir River, and the Siete Arroyos stream. The green field also alludes to the town's name. Completing the colors of the Counts of Cantillana (vert and gules) and referencing the enamel of the scroll that surrounded the arms on the seal with the motto 'VILLA DE VILLAVERDE', a gules point or field is added to the blazon, bearing the attributes of Saint Isidore (a silver book with the inscription ETVMOLOGARUM – the bishop's most representative work – and a gold crosier). His remains rested in the now-vanished castle of Villaverde del Río when they were being transferred to León, where they lie today. Finally, the blazon is surmounted by a mural crown, not only because of its renewed reference to the name of the municipality, but also in allusion to the aforementioned scroll that emphasized the town's title.
Flag: Description: Rectangular flag in the ratio of 11:18, composed of five parallel stripes perpendicular to the hoist, the first and fifth being 1/8 high and aqua green (PMS 346), the second and fourth being 1/8 high and crimson red (PMS 207), and the third being half high and aqua green. In the center, with a height of 3/8, is the coat of arms.
Meaning: The aquamarine color is derived from the municipality's name. In the interest of distinctiveness, this fresh, clear, and harmonious aquamarine hue was chosen, reflecting the natural landscape of the Sevillian plain where Villaverde del Río is located, near Siete Arroyos (Seven Streams) and where the Viar River flows into the Río Grande (Great River). The crimson stripes that run perpendicularly across the top and bottom of the flag are reminiscent of the coat of arms of Vicentelo de Leca, who blazoned his shield with these elements: two red bars and one green bar, the latter bearing the arms of a castle and lions.
