Presentation of Terrasson-Lavilledieu

The municipality of Terrasson-Lavilledieu (6266 inhabitants in 2014, 3,934 ha) is located on river Vézère, 20 km south-west of Brive. The municipality wsa established in 1963 as the merger of the former municipalities of Terrasson and Lavilledieu.

Terrasson gained significance in the Middle Ages with the establishment of a monastery founded by the hermit Sorus. According to legend, Sorus, looking for a site to build a new monastery, would have released doves and cried out, once they had landed, "terra sunt!".
More probably, Terrasson is named for the Occitan word "terras", "a small earhen levee". With the construction of the first permanent bridge over the Vézère, the town became in the 12th century an essential place of passage and crossing. The Pont Neuf (New Bridge) was built between 1825 and 1833 with the support of king Charles X.
The Gardens of Imaginary, regisetered as a remarkable garden by the French Ministry of Culture, are situated in Terrasson. Designed in 1996 by landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson, they present thirteen scenes of the myths and legends of the history of gardens, using simple natural elements such as trees, flowers, water and stone to suggest the passage of mankind from nature to agriculture to the urban life. A symbolic sacred wood, a rose garden, topiary art, and fountains are featured to tell the story.
