The municipality of Somme-Vesle (369 inhabitants in 2018; 3,531 ha; municipal website) is located 20 km north-east of Châlons-en-Champagne.

The name of the village refers to its location, close to the source ("somme" is derived from a Celtic root meaning "a source") of river Vesle. A tributary of the Aisne, the Vesle (140 km) passes through the town of Reims.
Self-styled Rock'n Roll Village, Somme-Vesle has been organizing since 2009 the Somme Ves'tival, starring local rock bands. The heavy metal group Shoeilager was established in the village in 1999.

The arms, designed by Jean-Paul Denise, were adopted on 15 January 2002.
Jean-Paul Denise, head of the Heraldry Commission of Marne and President of the Centre généalogique et héraldique de la Marne, published the Armorial de la Marne in 2002 and designed the coats of arms of several municipalities in the department.
