On the Quayside in Newcastle the streets were bedecked with large English
flags (St George's Crosses) defaced as follows: In the center and obscuring the
actual intersection of the crosses was a large mounted figure of St George in
gold, with his sword upraised in his right hand and his shield on his left arm.
The Sinister Chief quarter was defaced by an escutcheon of England Proper, viz a
field gules with three lions rampant or, one above the other and facing front.
Dexter Base quarter was defaced by the Red Rose of Lancaster on a long green
stem with three leaves, two to the left and one to the right. There were at
least a dozen of these flags suspended from lampposts on the Quayside, but no
one seemed to know what they meant or who had put them up. This banner has no
connection with the [surrounding regions].

This is the Rose and Lion Flag. I don't know if I've seen the exact design
before, but I've seen some crosses the sea with sports enthusiasts. A slightly
