Former Flag

[Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries flag] by Martin Grieve, 7 November 2007

The flag shown above is the original version, with Tudor crown, of what is now the ensign of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It first appeared as a 1918 amendment to the 1916 Admiralty Flag Book. The department's name was called the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and at  some later date (1955) became the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The current name was introduced in 2002.
David Prothero, 7 November 2007

According to The National Archives record, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries dates are 1919-1955. Further, DEFRA - the present acronym - was created in June 2001, but MAFF was not abolished until 27 March 2002 by The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Dissolution) Order of that year. There was obviously a short overlap period.
