The municipality of Acharnes (106,943 inhabitants in 2011; 14,900 ha) is a suburbs of the Athens metropolitan area.
The municipality was formed the 2011 local government reform as the merger of the former municipalities of Acharnes (100,743 inh.) and Thrakomakedones (6,200 inh.).
The northern part of the municipality is covered by the forested Parnitha mountains. The southern part, located in the plain of Athens, is densely populated.
Acharnes was named after the deme Acharnae (Ancient Greek: Ἁχαρναί), a subdivision of Attica in classical antiquity. Acharnes suffered significant damage from the 1999 Athens earthquake, being very close to the epicenter. Olivier Touzeau, 31 May 2014
