Presentation of Vir

Vir is located on the island of the same name in the north-west end of the County, connected to the mainland by a bridge. It has less than 1,000 inhabitants, but in summer this number rises drastically when tourists overwhelm the coast.

Flag of Vir

The symbols of Vir are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Vir), adopted on 20 March 1998 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 1 July 1998 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 4.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Vir, adopted on 2 November 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 14 November 2001 in Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 8. This is repeated in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Vir, adopted on 4 February 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 7 April 2006 in Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 6.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is described in Article 3 of the Decision as follows:

The flag is dark blue, with a ratio of length to width of 2:1 in accordance with the legal standards and the State flag. In the middle of the flag at the crossing point of the diagonals is the coat of arms of the Municipality printed on both sides; the dimensions of the coat of arms are 2/3 of the flag's dimensions. The coat of arms on the flag is bordered yellow.

The use of the flag is allowed in various events, including wedding celebrations.

Article 3 of the Municipality Statutes gives a very similar description:

The flag of the Municipality of Vir is dark blue. In the middle of the flag at the crossing point of the diagonals is the coat of arms of the Municipality; the dimension of the coat of arms is 2/3 of the flag's width. The coat of arms is bordered golden (yellow).

The coat of arms is described in Article 3 of the Decision as follows:

The coat of arms is in a shield shape. In a blue field is a golden plate with the head of St. John the Baptist coloured silver. The blue field is botrdered with a black line.

The Statutes claims that this is the historical coat of arms of Vir (which is seriously doubtful). The saint, locally known as Sveti Ivan Glavosjek, is the patron saint of Vir. The arms of Tounj uses the same charge.
