The company is active in various industries, including digital systems, power and renewable energy, railway systems, healthcare products, and financial systems. The company was founded as an electrical machinery manufacturing subsidiary of the Kuhara Mining Company in Hitachi, Ibaraki, becoming a subsidiary as "久原鉱業所日立製作所" (English: Kuhara Mining Co., Ltd. The company's logo is a monogram of the two Kanji characters that make up the word 'Hitachi' (日立) from “hi” (“sun”) and tachi (“rise/stand”) symbolizing the spirit of rising with the sun. The design’s four projections, resembling solar flares, reflect Hitachi’s origins in Hitachi city and its focus on progress, as its corporate symbol (monshō), conceived by its founder "小平浪平" (English: Namihei Odaira). The logo is often called "亀の甲マーク" (English: Tortoiseshell-shaped mark) and it is officially designated "日立マーク" (English: Hitachi Mark) (source:
