The city emblem was adopted in 1921 but there is no flag law. The blue flag 
has a white city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized kanji 田 Ta 
of Tanabe in a form of a star. it represents a future further development of the 
city like a twinkling constellation.

The flag of the former town of Hongu was blue with mark. The town is now, 
from 2005, part of the city of Tanabe.
