Ceremonial flag; image by Zachary Harden, 2 March 2023

Located in Kyoto City Kyoto Prefecture and established in 1949. The embroidery ceremonial flag has white background charged with a gold and blue symbol mark and horizontally written black kanji and English institute name and gold fringe. The two relative forms are imbued with the following principles. The rounded form of the left part expresses art and a flexible sensibility and rich humanity that is not bound by existing forms and the sharp form of the right part represents science and the theoretical intellect or reason of human beings. And the fusion of these two represents the meeting of science and art.?Furthermore, the organic left part can be viewed as the natural environment surrounding humans, and the right part as the technology created by humans. It also means the symbiosis of nature and science and technology. The form of the building, which expands from a single root, shows how the historical city of Kyoto will transmit to the world unique, cutting-edge technologies that harmonize people, the environment, industry, and culture, as well as the solid capabilities and rich sensibilities that will make this possible. The left part, which represents the sensibility, has warm colors that give a soft and relaxed impression, while the right part, which represents reason, has cool colors that give a calm and solid impression, creating a sense of unity with tones that evoke the tradition and calmness of Kyoto.
