Located in Bunkyo City Tokyo and established in 1877. The embroidered ceremonial flags has the University of Tokyo old mark of ginkgo leaves in gold with kanji word "大學" in white and the university name in gold in English. The flag has two colors: dark purple and red. Hanging flag with golden fringe. The unofficial flag used by Athletic Foundation of the University of Tokyo has sky blue background charged with a white kanji letters “大學”in the center. The old mark of the University of Tokyo was designed by combining two gingko leaves, and was adopted in 1948. When each department of the University of Tokyo decided on the mark, the design was selected from among those submitted by the public. After four rounds of selection and two internal opinion polls, the design developed by Professor Shoichi Hoshino of the Second Faculty of Engineering was adopted. The old mark, in some cases, is still allowed to be used on athletic club flags and on products that existed before the April 2004 national incorporation. (Source)
