Kazakhstan is divided into 17 regions (Kazakh: oblysy), 4 cities which are administered separately from their surrounding geographic regions. The regions are subdivided into counties (Kazakh: audany). The counties are further subdivided into rural districts.

2. Akmola Region (Aqmola oblysy)
3. Aktobe Region (Aqtöbe oblysy)
4. Almaty Region (Almaty oblysy)
5. Atyrau Region (Atyrau oblysy)
6. East Kazakhstan Region (Şyğys Qazaqstan oblysy)
7. Jambyl Region (Jambyl oblysy)
8. Jetisu Region (Jetısu oblysy)
9. Karaganda Region (Qarağandy oblysy)
10. Kostanay Region (Qostanai oblysy)
11. Kyzylorda Region (Qyzylorda oblysy)
12. Mangystau Region (Mañğystau oblysy)
13. North Kazakhstan Region (Soltüstık Qazaqstan oblysy)
14. Pavlodar Region (Pavlodar oblysy)
15. Turkistan Region (Türkıstan oblysy)
16. Ulytau Region (Ūlytau oblysy)
17. West Kazakhstan Region (Batys Qazaqstan oblysy)

Cities of republican significance:

• Almaty city (Almaty qalasy)
• Astana city (Astana qalasy) - formerly Nur-Sultan, the capital city of Kazakhstan
• Baikonur city (Baiqoñyr qalasy) - city is currently being leased to Russia along with Baikonur Cosmodrome until 2050
• Shymkent city (Şymkent qalasy)
