Nijeveen is now part of the municipality of Meppel (Drenthe, the Netherlands).
The border of its flag has been included in the new Meppel flag.
The flag is derived from the municipal Coat of Arms. The chequy fields
stand for 27 farms which formed in 1477 an independent parish. The 10 silver
cirklets in the border remind of the fact that Meppel was raised as an
independent municipality from Kolderveen in 1422, provided it paid every
year 10 'mud' (hectolitre, c. 3 bushels) rye.
